CITIES’ INTELLIGENCE - HACKATHON
Urbanism, once a hard science (or at least it aspired to be) governed by long-term expert plans, is giving way to tactical, agile, temporary, negotiated urbanism that embraces experimentation and data science. It reflects a radically new situation: it’s no longer “Urban planning as usual”, nor “politics as usual”. The city “as usual” is over; new strategies and risks must be taken. While local governments are used to moderate solutions, this shift is daunting and unsettling, often leading to denial.
Our seminar aims to explore this paradigm shift. Cities need intelligence to transform themselves, but this intelligence is first and foremost that of their inhabitants, far from the dystopia of the Smart City where technology was at the helm. Two hackathons will explore two main challenges for urban planning today: the becoming and repurposing of underground spaces, focusing on the CBD of La Défense, near Paris and the strategies in favor of encouraging community engagement in the renovation of rural town development through the La Cité Bahut project in Semur-en-Auxois in France.
