A lack of water, drought and accompanying storms have made the spruce stands in the Harz Mountains vulnerable to the bark beetle. Large parts of the forest stand have been destroyed. The symptoms of climate change are unmistakable.
The concepts of conviviality and resonance give us new ideas for reading and shaping our landscapes. Our habitats are not only inhabited by humans. Animals, plants and other creatures enrich our living systems, both on demand and unasked. They are intertwined and resonate with each other in many different ways. One task of landscape architecture is the regenerative transformation of degraded landscapes that have been altered by human and non-human influences. These changes are clearly visible in the Harz Mountains.
Research into the relationships between human and non-human actors in the Harz plays an important role here. How does living together in the Harz work? how do the actors react to changes? Can we describe and further develop the emotional, material, cultural and natural resonance of the Harz? Could the dying of the spruce trees even be an opportunity for the inhabitants and guests of the Harz to grow together with other living beings in a new, innovative way?
