MSA-BARCELONA KURZENTWÜRF

Barcelona Kurzentwürf is a short design workshop involving urban, sustainable and architectural strategies. The workshop will focus on the outcome of the 2024 International Ideas Competition for Young Architects to remodel permanent blind walls into facades organized by the Barcelona City Council, UNESCO and UIA - International Union of Architects to celebrate the nomination of Barcelona as UNESCO World Capital of Architecture in 2026 as host city for the UIA2026 World Congress of Architects.

Blind walls are anonymous walls that divide properties. Although they were not designed to play any role in the building’s external performances, they can end up being exposed to public view in a permanent provisional state because of urban planning changes. When this happens, it creates a discontinuity in the landscape, a rupture in the urban fabric, which can cause serious structural and habitability problems for the affected and neighbouring buildings, and they have a marked visual impact on the public space.

Students will be asked to propose ideas for the intervention on blind walls in different locations across the city. According to its typological characteristics, environment, urban conditions or orientation different requirements will be raised for each location.

Kurzentwürf short design workshops are integrated short design modules held in the first semester of the Munster School of Architecture (MSA) Master study programme, in cooperation with international lecturers, via a network of renowned European schools of Architecture. ETSAB and MSA students will work in groups combining students from both universities.
